| Description | |
| Butterfly Gorge is a naturally occurring feature approximately 300 meters long, located within an area of deep sandstone escarpment, through which the Douglas River flows. A series of rock pools and small waterfalls occur along the gorge before it opens out into a large deep, round pool. The flat, sandy banks and the permanent water of the river support a strip of riparian vegetation, made up of melaleuca and pandanus. | |
| Statement of Heritage Value | |
|
Butterfly Gorge, located on the Douglas River approximately 17km south east of Tguwaliyn, Douglas Hot Springs, is significant to the Territory for its natural environment. The gorges riparian zones are vital elements of the savannah landscape and their contribution to biodiversity, cultural values and the economy is disproportionate to the small area they occupy. The riparian zones are considered important for maintaining savannah and in-stream biodiversity, stream channel morphology and water quality. The riparian zones, active thermal springs and a sandstone gorge landscape are of significant scientific interest and are relatively uncommon in the Darwin region making the site valuable for research, monitoring and education. |
