Managing Northern Territory Shipwrecks
Shipwrecks and associated relics and other maritime sites, such as aircraft lost at sea, are managed by the Northern Territory Government Department of Natural Resources the Environment and the Arts (NRETA).
Management of shipwrecks that lie in Northern Territory waters around the coast are managed by Heritage Conservation Services (HCS)
Management of shipwrecks that lie in Commonwealth waters around the coast of the Northern Territory are managed by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) and shipwrecks found in Northern Territory waters are managed by the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH).
Management responsibilities include;
- Survey and identification of located shipwreck sites
- Recommendations for interpretation and protection
- Devise management plans
- Oversee the conservation and exhibition of relics from shipwreck sites
- Issue permits and provide publicity for historic shipwrecks and maritime matters generally
