The Northern Territory Shipwreck Database

The Northern Territory Shipwreck Database (NTSD) began as a card index system in the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in the late 1970s. Over the years, a number of changes were made altering some aspects of its structure and function. The NTSD today, now on computer, still serves its original primary function as a research and information tool. In recent years aircraft wrecks lost at sea have also been added, as well as a miscellaneous category.

The NTSD currently contains 232 shipwrecks, 73 aircraft wrecks and 14 miscellaneous sites known as ‘other’ that are known to have been lost in waters off the coast of the Northern Territory. Not all of the sites included in the database have been found, indeed most have not.

However despite the lack of known locations, the NTSD is still a useful tool for planners, developers, divers, students and the general public. Those finding a shipwreck are required to report them to the managing authorities.
