Re-think Governance – NEPM Obligations
Re-thinking Governance will ensure the responsibilities of the National Environment Protection Used Packaging Materials Measure are appropriately met in the NT. This will be achieved by:
- Working with industry to raise awareness of environmental responsibilities and obligations under the National Environment Protection (Used Packaging Materials) Measure (UPM NEPM; and
- Working with local governments to develop a better understanding of resource recovery activities in the Territory and allow more accurate reporting under the UPM NEPM.
Work will be completed with various stakeholders to identify Territory businesses and brand-owners that may trigger the UPM NEPM (i.e. annual turnover of >$5m/yr) and inform them of their current obligations.
Collaborative work will also be completed with local governments to seek their cooperation in establishing a more effective annual reporting process. To enable more accurate reporting, cooperation will be sought from commercial resource recovery operations in the Territory to track volumes of resources recovered / land filled in the Territory.
