Re-thinking Waste-In-Industry
This project focuses on improving resource recovery from two of the Territory’s key industries - hospitality and building. It will involve:
- Working with industry to establish Codes of Practice in key waste generation industries; and
- Providing an appropriate incentive to minimise waste and increase the volume of resources recovered.
The project will involve the Northern Territory Government working with agency and industry representatives to clarify environmental responsibilities under the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act in relation to waste minimisation and recycling.
The Re-thinking Waste-in-Hospitality Project will assess existing infrastructure to identify opportunities and incentives to establish back-of-shop and public place recycling services as a hospitality industry standard in the Territory. The project will also investigate the product stewardship obligations of major brand-owners and seek their support for away-from-home recycling services.
TheRe-thinking Waste-in-Building Projectwill also undertake an assessment of current practices and waste streams to develop waste management planning as a standard in the industry and promote the development of materials recovery and reuse in industrial applications in the Territory.
