Pollution Hotline

How the System Works

A person observes someone creating pollution or doing something to harm the environment.

OR

A person observes someone carrying out an activity that might cause pollution or harm to the environment, or is creating a nuisance through creating too much noise, dust, smoke, odour etc.

Regardless of whether or not you think it is serious enough, call the Pollution Hotline 1800 064 567, after all, as it is a freecall service it won’t cost you a cent and you will be doing the community a good service.

The NT Police Fire and Emergency Services control room based at the Peter Macaulay Centre in Berrimah receives and records reports of pollution incidents.

An officer from the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and The Arts, authorised under the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act and who is on-call at the time, is paged and duly notified of the details in a timely manner.

The officer will then contact the caller to verify and identify further details. Once the officer has a more complete understanding of the situation he or she will determine what other agencies will need to be informed and might be required to assist in responding to the incident in the first instance.

Following resolution of the pollution incident, sometimes carried out with the caller in attendance and offering further assistance, the initial report to NT Police Fire and Emergency Services is updated and the caller reporting the incident is, if they so wish, informed of the outcome.

Although the service is free and is there to assist you with environmental issues, we are very particular about your right to privacy and will in no way relay your details to other parties with the exception of the Police should we be asked. You are not required to divulge information about yourself, however, if you do wish to be kept informed of our investigation or are willing to make a statutory declaration in support of the issue, the Authorised Officer will request a name and contact number.
