Sustainable Transport

Sustainable transport policies generally aim to reduce congestion, improve local environments and encourage healthier and safer lifestyles.  Cycling, walking and public transport are key modes of sustainable transport and policy objectives include integrating transport and land use planning, travel demand management and reducing vehicle emissions.

The TravelSmart Australia program is a key initiative for fostering sustainable transport.  The TravelSmart program supports people to make voluntary changes in their travel behaviour, encouraging use of buses,car-pooling, cycling and walking, and reducing reliance on private vehicles. Switching to active travel, even if only one day a week, can improve health and fitness, make a real difference on climate change and save money on fuel.

The NT TravelSmart Workplaces project will be the first TravelSmart project to be implemented in the NT.  The project focuses on workplaces in Darwin and Palmerston and at this stage involves the Departments of Planning & Infrastructure, Health and Community Services and Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts. To contact the Northern Territory TravelSmart Program send an email to travelsmart@nt.gov.au
