Education and Sustainable Lifestyles
Establishing community awareness of sustainability and fostering sustainable behaviours is a key to reaching sustainable outcomes. Education about sustainability is important for the whole community and particularly in schools.
The Northern Territory Department of Employment, Education and Training has made a commitment to the national initiative Sustainable Schools. The initiative implements efficiencies in a school’s management of resources such as energy, waste and water, and the management of school grounds. It integrates this approach into the existing curriculum and daily running of the school. The whole school becomes a focal point of good practice in environmental education for sustainability with students, parents, teachers and the community interacting and learning together.
Some remote area schools participating in the Sustainable Schools Program are making the switch to sustainable energy by accessing the Renewable Energy Rebate Program (RERP).
The Northern Territory Government EnvironmeNT Grants are available annually to community groups and individuals for environmental projects and educational activities in the Territory.
