Sustaining Air Quality
The impact of industry on air quality in the Territory has been minimal in the past. With the industry base increasing in the Territory it is important to consider to what extent industry will affect air quality and how impacts can be minimised.
Bushfires have the potential to impact on air quality in the Northern Territory and the Northern Territory Bushfire Management Strategy is being developed by Bushfires NT.
There are also national measures in place to maintain and enhance air quality throughout Australia. The National Environment Protection Council (NEPC) has set uniform standards for ambient air quality. The standards are contained in the National Environment Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure.
The National Environment Protection (Air Toxics) Measure made by NEPC provides a framework for monitoring, assessing and reporting on ambient levels of five air toxics, which will assist in the collection of information for the future development of national air quality standards for these pollutants.
The National Pollutant Inventory is an internet database designed to provide the community, industry and government with information on the types and amounts of certain substances being emitted to the air, land and water. One of the objectives of the inventory is to promote waste minimisation, cleaner production, energy and resource savings.
The Northern Territory Government is currently developing an air quality framework which aims to identify and manage the impacts of emissions on our air quality.
