Waste Management and Pollution Control Act

Specific environmental issues addressed under the Act

  • Pursuing actions developed under the NT Waste Management and Pollution Control Strategy endorsed by Government in September 1995.
  • Implementation of National Environmental Protection Measures as Environmental Protection Objectives under the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act. These will include:
    • Development and Implementation of a National Pollutant Inventory EPO
    • Development and Implementation of a Assessment of Site Contamination EPO
    • Development and Implementation of an Ambient Air Quality EPO
  • The Litter Abatement and Resource Recovery Strategy.
  • Implementation of various National hazardous waste initiatives and strategies, that have included making provisions for collection and disposal of unwanted farm chemicals and empty containers through such initiatives as ChemCollect and DrumMuster, and controlling use and waste disposal of persistent organic pesticides through association with Chemcert and Pestcert educational initiatives. We are also in the process of developing and implementing plans for the management of PCBs and other scheduled wastes, such as medical and quarantine wastes and ships ballast water.
  • Partnerships with other public and private sector groups such as the Local Government Association of the NT, the NT Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Motor Trades Association and Keep Australia Beautiful Council (NT).
