Environment Protection Objectives

Other legislation important for Environmental Protection in the Territory

The Northern Territory is a party to the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Environment (IGAE). Under this Agreement, a National Environment Protection Council (NEPC) was developed with a primary function of developing National Environmental Protection Measures (NEPM). NEPMs are national objectives for protecting and managing particular aspects of the environment.

NEPC, now incorporated under the Environment Protection & Heritage Council (EPHC), is in the process of developing and implementing a number of NEPMs. These are to be implemented by all parties involved in the IGAE (for more information on NEPC and NEPMs, go to www.ephc.gov.au).

In the Northern Territory, NEPMs can be implemented through an Environmental Protection Objective, under the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act 1998. The Environment Protection (National Pollution Control Inventory) Objective, currently the only EPO, was made in 2004 to give effect to provisions of the National Pollutant Inventory.

Below is a list of all the current Environment Protection Measures being developed and implemented here in the NT along with their corresponding NEPM websites.
