Travel management

Cycling is an environmentally friendly mode of transport

There are a range of options you can consider that will result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions from transport. With a small amount of planning you can reduce the number of kilometres you will need to travel. Alternatively you could gain the added health benefits from walking or riding a bicycle (bicycle path maps) or you could catch a bus (bus timetables) or share a vehicle with others. See the Travelsmart website for more information about managing your travel better.

Buying a vehicle

When you do buy a new vehicle it is important to ensure you get a car appropriate to your needs. The Green Vehicle Guide will give you an indication of the relative efficiency of different vehicles.

Driving behaviour

The way you drive your vehicle can have a dramatic effect on its fuel consumption. Slow acceleration, minimal braking and reducing the amount of idling all contributes to greater fuel efficiency.

Offsetting vehicle emissions

Consider contributing to a scheme that will grow enough trees to reabsorb the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from your vehicle each year. Eg. Greenfleet vehicle emissions offset program or the Big Green Umbrella Project.
