New Wildlife Category for EnvironmeNT Grants

In the past, the EnvironmeNT Grants program has received considerable interest from groups and individuals wishing to pursue projects specifically relating to wildlife. For this reason, we have developed a wildlife-specific category for the 2008 program. Community groups, education providers, councils, organisations and industry bodies that have an interest in improving the management of native and introduced wildlife are encouraged to apply through this category.

The wildlife-specific component of the EnvironmeNT grants will focus on applied outcomes to improve our knowledge about wildlife in the Northern Territory and to assist individuals, organisations and Government to better manage native wildlife. Specifically, we will be focusing on the following key areas:

  • Feral animal management programs,
  • Community awareness and education campaigns specifically relating to wildlife in the Northern Territory,
  • Projects that will improve our knowledge and understanding of the biology, ecology and behaviour of native wildlife,
  • Community programs that will improve rehabilitation of natural areas,
  • Projects that investigate the sustainable use of native wildlife,
  • Programs aiming to prevent the further spread of invasive species, particularly those focusing on islands,
  • Programs investigating the cultural value or sustainability of wildlife for indigenous communities,
  • Threatened species protection or management programs.

The EnvironmeNT Grants program also retains its traditional focus on sustainability issues as they relate to the built environment.
