Individual grants were available to community groups, industry associations, local government and individuals for projects that provide benefits to the environment through direct action, research or education.

Description:

The project aims to create a dynamic and enjoyable community event that brings together a wide range of stallholders, participants and speakers from diverse backgrounds and sectors - to bring alive their knowledge and experiences about sustainable living and conserving nature in a creative and exciting festival environment. The Sustainability fair will assist community groups, schools, individuals, businesses and government agencies to share knowledge and experiences, learn from each other and expert speakers, and promote their sustainability-focussed products and services.

COOLmob – Environment Centre NT

Project Name:

Desktop Analysis and Phone Survey of COOLmob Audits

Description:

Over the past 2 years COOLmob has conducted several hundred household sustainability audits. COOLmob would like to analyse and learn from this work by telephone surveys of past participants, analysis of power and water usage and analysis of barriers to behaviour change. This information will be extremely valuable in targeting and shaping future community services from COOLmob.

Ride to Work

National Ride to Work Day – Northern Territory

Description:

The EnvironmeNT grant will be used to support the coordination and implementation of ‘Ride to Work’ day in the Northern Territory. This will include promotion of the initiatve, recruitment of new riders, workplace information packs and community breakfasts. National Ride to Work Day is a community event, a social motivator; a celebratory and fun occasion to ride to work. It motivates both new and established riders and it contributes to a reduction in car usage.

Project Name:

Solar Hot Water Systems Bulk Buy Scheme

Description:

This project will establish a bulk buy installation program for solar hot water services that would also take advantage of various Government rebates. Electric hot water accounts for about one third of electricity consumed in the home, when not generated from a solar hot water system. Presently it is estimated that less than 50% of households use solar hot water heating. COOLmob believe that this percentage could increase if solar hot water systems were offered at less cost than presently available.

Climate Action Darwin - Website

Description:

Climate Action Darwin Online (CADO) aims to engage 500+ NT residents through a website for understanding and promoting renewable energy.  By building awareness and community momentum for renewable energy the project will contribute to energy efficiency and will also assist the NT to meet short and medium term renewable energy targets and decrease our carbon emissions to make for a cleaner future for Territorians.

Climate Emergency Seminar Series

Description:

This project will raise awareness in the Alice Springs community about the urgency of behavioural change through a series of national speaker events and practitioner workshops; and by piloting the Living Smart Workshop Program in Alice Springs with aim of establishing ongoing program. The project will be promoted through the media, community networks, posters, fliers, events like The Alice Springs Desert Festival and the Sustainability Fair, and on the local CAG website as well as key partner websites – DKA COOLmob and Arid Lands Environment Centre ALEC.

COOLmob Greenhouse Friendly Tropical Building Design

Description:

This project will provide advice on what people should look for when choosing tropical friendly accommodation in the Top End. It will raise awareness of how poor and unsuitable building design contributes to uncomfortable living in the tropics (and high power bills for air conditioning)
The project will produce guidelines for how to build and renovate homes (including units) that provide comfortable living in the tropics while using the least power and water possible and how to create a low water garden that contributes to comfortable living in the tropics in homes.

Project Name:

Coniston Spring Creek Rehabilitation

Description:

The project proposes to conserve, protect and rehabilitate a site of conservation significance and Aboriginal sacred site known as Coniston Springs which is located 240km north west of Alice Springs on the private property of Coniston Station.
The project aims to control the impacts from invasive animal and plant species towards the high conservation value aquatic ecosystem through establishment of a fence around the surveyed perimeter of the wetland area to conserve and improve scarce water resources and important nutrient cycling. The project will additionally establish and maintain a jointly managed integrated weed control regime which will target emerging weeds of national significance and environmental weeds occurring at the site level post fence construction to enhance natural regeneration.

Gardens for Food – Towards a desertSMART Transition Town

Description:

The Gardens for Food project will involve households committing to producing fruit and vegetables in their own gardens while also sharing skills, time, labour and produce with other Gardeners for Food. Arid Lands Environment Centre will facilitate, organise and coordinate the Gardens for Food network in partnership with the local SeedSavers, local nurseries, Desert Knowledge Australia COOLmob and local Gardens for Food participants.

Enhancing Gamba Grass Management in the Lower Daly

Description:

This project will see the purchase and use of Quik Spray unit which will be used to assist Woolianna road landholders and MalakMalak rangers to continue to control Gamba grass and other weeds on their lands. It will be in use throughout the year to support the substantial efforts of the Wanagamaty Landcare group to manage key weeds in the region.

Project Name:

The Alice Springs Regenerators Guide

Description:

An identification guide of local regenerating plants will provide a valuable aid for managing vegetation in the Alice Springs region. Its primary purpose to assist land owners and managers to identify regenerating plants using photographs and simple descriptions. The guide will also present information on weed control and native plant regeneration techniques that are suitable for Central Australian conditions. The guide will be produced for land owners and managers who are managing vegetation on private or public lands either for conservation purposes or for aesthetic or fire management purposes.

Project Name:

Strategic Management of Grader Grass at Wongalara

Description:

This project is seeking to eradicate grader grass from Wongalara Sanctuary, both to prevent degradation of ecosystems and prevent the currently small and isolated infestations from propagating along the Mainoru and Wilton floodplains to other parts of the catchment.
To achieve eradication, periodic monitoring of the sites of known previous infestations will continue for longer than the period of this project.  Searches for new infestations and appropriate early response to their discovery will be ongoing. The EnvironmeNT grant will help support the first year of the eradication effort.

Project Name:

Eradication of the Invasive Introduced Weed Olive Hymenachne and Mimosa Pigra from Harrison Hunting Reserve

Description:

NT Field and Game, in conjunction with Parks and Wildlife plan to fight the infestations of Olive Hymenachne, Para, Mission and Gamba grasses as well as Mimosa Pigra in the area of Beatrice Lagoon and Harrison Dam Hunting Reserve. Members from NT Field and Game will assist Parks and Wildlife to manage the weed infestations. Results will be report in the Sunday Territorian NT Field and Game column.

Coomalie Gamba Grass Action Plan Implementation

Description:

This project will build on a range of initiatives Coomalie Council is undertaking in relation to the management of the invasive weed Gamba Grass. It will continue and expand its support for local residents getting involved in the management of Gamba Grass across the Coomalie region and will produce a weed management plan.

Alice Springs Landcare

Northside Parks Landcare Project

Description:

This project will involve the community in the protection and restoration of the natural environment in public parks in Northside, Alice Springs. The project will focus on Dixon Park and Maynard Park that are undeveloped parks in Northside which support natural features and vegetation.
Objectives of the project are to undertake tree planting in Dixon Park, and to control weeds such as Buffel grass in both Dixon and Maynard parks to protect the existing vegetation from weed invasion and fire. Community involvement will be encouraged in all aspects of the project.

Feral Animal Control Program – Roper River Valley

Description:

This project seeks to continue the work of the Conservation and Pest Management NT volunteers working with the Roper River Landcare Group and local landholders to control feral animals in the Roper River region. A reduction in the existing feral animal population will immediately reduce grazing impacts on the unique and productive lands of the Roper River Catchment, with flow-on benefits for landscape health including issues such as erosion, biodiversity, water quality, stream bed degradation and weeds spread.

Friends of Fogg Dam

Fogg Dam Field Day 2010

Description:

The field day at Fogg Dam in 2010 will increase community awareness on a range of environmental issues including the wellbeing of the natural environment, the management of feral animals, weeds and wildfire within the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve and on the Adelaide River Floodplain and the rapid spread of cane toads, their impact and research to protect natïve fauna.

Description:

This project seeks to continue the work of the Conservation and Pest Management NT (CPM) in the ground control of the targeted feral animal hotspots within the Victoria River District.  The grant will support the CPM volunteers who will be providing ground shooting teams for the Victoria River District Conservation Association feral animal eradication and control programs for 2009.

This project continues into the third year of the Re-Thinking waste in Schools Challenge. It maintains interest and motivation, provides mentor support and service with a focus on achieving outcomes that are sustainable and strengthen the environmental culture in NT schools.

Wagait Beach Recycling

Description:

This project is to establish recycling for waste at Wagait Beach. The project was formed in response to a community meeting expressing concern for the lack of facilities.The project will install a series of containers located at the Refuse Site, this will provide people with the facility in which to place their recyclables and should free up the amount of waste going to landfill by around 50%.

Collection and Removal of Rubbish from Harrison Dam and Lambells Lagoon hunting reserves for the 2009 Goose Season

Description:

The issue of rubbish in our shooting reserves is cause for concern and has been highlighted in the media, both print and radio. While much of this is bio-degradeable ie carcasses, some littering does occur. NT Field and Game members want to address the problem. The EnvironmeNT grant will assist NT Field and Game to improve waste management at Harrison Dam and Lambells Lagoon. The issue will be discussed in the regular Sunday Territorian column of NT Field and Game.

Wildlife Conservation

Australian Wildlife Conservancy

Project Name:

Conserving Great Desert Skinks and Other Threatened Fauna at Newhaven

Description:

This project aims to protect this important population of Great Desert Skink (GDS) with an intensive fire management program in the NW of Newhaven and adjoining Aboriginal lands that will limit extensive unplanned fires. Other desert species will benefit, including threatened taxa like Brush-tailed Mulgara. The response of GDS populations will be monitored via standardised surveys for GSD burrows. Track surveys will be used to monitor the activity of other native species and feral species.
The project will be carried out by Australian Wildlife Conservancy staff, Nyrripi community members, and Warlpiri Rangers, extending a collaborative relationship that developed over the past two years. The project will provide employment opportunities for local indigenous rangers, and continue to build capacity and foster engagement in natural resource management.

Wildlife Survey in the Gulf of Carpentaria

Description:

This project is to conduct a biological inventory on Pungalina Station, which is an area with poor biological data. The project will employ the Garawa Rangers working alongside the Australian Wildlife Conservancy to carry out the 6-week intensive survey. The results will be used in creating management plans for the area.

Tiwi Island Cadet Ranger Program

Description:

The EnvironmeNT grant will support the initial stages of development of the Tiwi Island cadet ranger program, including meetings with project partners and purchase of equipment for the program for Tiwi College. The ranger cadets will be mentored by the established Tiwi Land Rangers, providing them with strong, local role models who are employed full time in natural resource management. The program will promote long term protection of biodiversity values and provide knowledge and experience relevant to employment opportunities working in Natural Resource Management in the future.

Community Engagement in Natural Resource Management through the Alice Springs Land for Wildlife Scheme

Description:

Land for Wildlife provides advice on integrating wildlife habitat with other land management activities, sustainable water use in the garden, managing remnant vegetation and fauna occurring on properties, controlling feral animals and weeds and provides information about the ecological roles and requirements of native flora and fauna in the local area.  The EnvironmeNT grant will support the delivery of workshops, information services and advice.

Project Name:

Engaging Walpari Communities to Determine the Role of Camp Dogs

Description:

This project forms part of a scientific study to improve understanding of the role of dingoes in the Tanami Desert. The project will involve three communities (Yuendumu, Mount Theo and Lajamanu) employing Indigenous rangers to assist in the collection of DNA, scat samples, weights and health indicators from camp dogs. The project data will improve knowledge of the impact dingoes and camp dogs have on native fauna to inform NT conservation and threatened species management.

Project Name:

Northern Territory Threatened Species Art and Photography Exhibition 2009

Description:

The exhibition will be held on 7 September, National Threatened Species Day, and is aimed at raising public awareness of the Northern Territory’s threatened plants and animals. Previous exhibitions have been very successful in engaging a variety of people in the Northern Territory in conservation issues, with over 300 entries in the 2006 show. Entries can be submitted by any interested Northern Territory residents, regardless of age, gender, religion, nationality, professional or amateur status. School and community groups are particularly encouraged.
By focusing attention on the plight of many of the Northern Territory’s threatened animals and plants, the Threatened Species Art and Photography Exhibition aims to increase community awareness and encourage active involvement in the prevention of further losses of northern Australia's unique natural values.

Gove Veterinary Services

East Arnhem Wildlife Conservation

Description:

This project will train the practising vet and associated nurses in anaesthesia, surgery, medicine and rehabilitation of injured wildlife specific to this region. This includes various birds plus culturally significant sea turtles and dugong.  From there, this training is intended to have a trickle down effect where by a series of seminars will be conducted by the Nhulunbuy Vet and nurses to improve the knowledge of current wildlife carers and train any interested members of the public in becoming a wildlife carer.   It is a requirement of the NT Parks and Wildlife that registered wildlife carers have received some formal training. Finally, a public seminar is will be held addressing ‘what to do’ if you come across injured wildife and basic first aid.
