Over the three sub-categories, fifteen school projects were successful with a total of $28,600 allocated.

Alawa Primary School

Region: Darwin
Sub Region: Darwin
Focus: Renewable energy technologies
Amount: $2000
Project Name: Solar Power on our Farm
Description:

Alawa school farm provides a practical opportunity for students to learn and implement skills. Our farm is currently off the grid. With our grant we would purchase 2 x 80 watt solar panels, batteries and an inverter to give the 190 students of Alawa a practical understanding of how energy from the sun can be captured and utilised. Our renewable energy system would be used to power a light, fan, music or a fish tank filter to illustrate the capacity and limitations of a small system.

Parap Primary School Council Inc

Description:

This project seeks funding support to improve energy saving measures in schools buildings by retrofitting movement detectors and/or lighting timing devices in school classrooms.

Description:

Raise student awareness of the local environment and develop a sense of responsibility for it. Purchase rubbish bins, bags, gloves, paint. Paint bins and offer a rewards system for clean areas. Work with local community to conduct a litter drive.

Description:

Description:

This project has a two pronged approach: establish a can collection point that is linked with rethinking waste and establish a bush tucker garden that incorporates environmental education.

Project Name: Driver Reconciliation Learnscape
Description:

Involve school students, local indigenous community and the wider community in developing a reconciliation landscape at the school. This provides students with ongoing access to an area for educational purposes and enjoyment as well as the opportunity to observe, study and enjoy local flora and fauna.

Project Name: Henbury Footprint - Sustainable recycling and composting in a special school
Description:

A group of students are seeking to reduce Henbury's environmental footprint and develop a partnership with Shoal Bay Recycling Centre. Funding will be used to introduce recycling for paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, aluminium and steel cans across the school; introduce worm farm composting across the school; further develop the school garden utilising the compost and paper collected; develop an enterprise education program utilising the recyclable materials and the products created i.e. sale of composting worms and recycled paper goods.

Macfarlane Primary School

Project Name: Native Bush Tucker Garden
Description:

Design & develop a native bush garden in the school. Students will undertake educational acitivites regarding environmental issues e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, impact of habitat destruction, non-native plants and the impact on local habitats, particularly plants identified as pests, the benefits of native plants, water use and sustainability, and the traditional uses for native plants in Indigenous culture.

Description:

Construct a viewing platform in the Tall Timbers Project as an outdoor classroom learning environment. Students will participate in a variety of biodiversity activities year round with the construction of a portable shade sail (which will also be able to be utilised for other activities in outdoor learning environments).

Description:

Purchase food scrap and recycling packages bins for each classroom. Purchase and set up a worm farm. Prepare and make a vegetable garden based on permaculture "No dig" techniques. Set up a mini enterprise through the sales of any food crops and fertiliser.

Description:

A whole school community will revegetate (post cyclone Helen) the oval, playground and along the Council owned walkway/bike track. Learn about water-wise landscaping and how recycled plant matter at The Shoal Bay Compost facility will help.

Alawa Primary School

Project Name: Friends of the Frillies
Description:

Whole of school effort over 12 months, to record Frilled neck lizard population at school and make notes on any toads sighted. Protect the farm area with toad fencing and the school grounds with toad traps, with the aim of creating a toad free haven for lizards and frogs. Links to frogwatch. Greening Australia will plan and create some native lizard habitat areas within the school yard.
