2008-09 Individual Project Grants

Individual grants were available to community groups, industry associations, local government and individuals for projects that provide benefits to the environment through direct action, research or education. Grants were available in the Wildlife category for the first time in 2008/09.

27 individual projects were successful with a total of $268,000 allocated.

 

In 2008-2009 six categories were available:

Description:

The current edition of the “Greenhouse Friendly Action in Central Australia” booklet has been popular. It contains practical, interesting and relevant information to promote energy efficiency and water-wise action amongst residents. It links consumption (power, water and products) to climate change, encouraging action. This project will create a revised edition of the booklet, for new residents in town and distribution to Tennant Creek. Revisions to the booklet include updated statistics and extra information relevant to Tennant Creek. Opportunity for community collaboration.

Project Name: Tennant Creek Home Energy Audits
Description: Desert Knowledge Australia COOLmob is trialling a Home Energy Audit service in Tennant Creek and would like to continue the service in 2008-2009. We will train a team of auditors to provide Home Energy Audits on a regular basis. Home Energy Audits assist residents to reduce power bills by giving customised, unbiased advice tailored to their needs, providing motivation to make changes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promotes awareness of our ecological impacts and solutions and provides a clear outline of consumer usage patterns.

Project Name: Malak Garden - A Growing Community
Description: Will be established in, around and under the Malak Shopping Centre. Volunteers will construct and plant the garden. Group members will run weekend sessions sharing knowledge: e.g. bed preparation, planting, pest management, composting, worm farming, harvesting, pruning and thinning. This will also contribute ideas about garden aesthetics from different cultural backgrounds. Produce will be shared among group members with some used in a proposed community dinners for the Malak area .

Project Name: Students for Conservation
Description: Practical hands-on conservation experiences for high school students. Partners will be Kormilda College, Darwin High School, Landcare groups and Recreational Area Management Committees. CVA will provide a qualified team leader, insurance for participants, First Aid kit, vehicle, trailer, tools, risk assessment and safety briefing for students. Students will be taught correct use of hand tools for revegetation, activities to preserve and enhance native vegetation, water quality monitoring, flora, fauna and marine debris surveys.

Project Name: COOLmob Community Service Announcements
Description: Produce 2-3 new COOLmob television Community Service Announcements to be aired free on commercial TV stations throughout northern and central Australia. The COOLmob set of 'EnviroGirl and EnviroBoy' TV advertisements is designed to educate the community about the key ways of saving energy and greenhouse gas emissions from our home energy and transport use. Feedback from audited households and the public confirm that the COOLmob TV CSAs are leading to real behaviour change in the community.

Project Name: World Environment Day EXPO 2009
 

Coinciding with World Environment Day 2009 and building on the success of previous Expo's, an Expo will be held at a central Darwin location involving local community environment groups, local and Territory Government agencies, education institutions and small business enterprises. The Expo will include:

Information stalls and displays, food and drink stalls (where possible providing recyclable containers), workshops/talks,World Environment Day Forum, performance/films, an exhibition of artwork by young artists exploring recycled product as a medium and childen's activities.

Project Name: St Josephs College Sinkhole Protection Project
Description: Aims to protect and enhance a degraded sinkhole which has been impacted by human activity located on a karst limestone area within the school grounds. The project will be a partnership between St Joseph College and Greening Australia NT – Katherine.

Project Name: Dave Lindner and the South Alligator River wetlands
Description: Dave Lindner has worked in the wetlands of the mid South Alligator River catchment since the early 1970s. As a Conservation Commission ranger, Environmental Manager for a local Aboriginal association, manager of a buffalo domestication project, and self-taught environmental observer and activist, he has maintained a close and continuous engagement with environmental processes and management issues in the region. This project will record his accumulated knowledge and experience.

Project Name: One Step from the river - native food and medicinal plants
Description: This project will seek to plant and display plant species observable before settlement. There will be a large selection of food and medicinal plants recommended by traditional owners and Parks and Wildlife. Educational plaques will be alongside each plant. Visitors will be able to hire/rent a commentary from I.A.D, which will be down-loadable to ipods and mobile phones in various languages.

Description: Millennium Kids has been invited by the Australian Association for Environmental Education to coordinate a youth environment conference (9-12th July) as part of their national biennial conference in Darwin 2008. This will be the first Carbon-Free Youth Conference in Australia. There will be activities in locations across Australia and then connect via video link.

Description: Develop an EMP for the municipality. It will include management strategies for all lakes including weed control, water quality testing and flora/fauna surveys (Durack, Gunn and Marlows Lagoon), natural bush management in parks, the escarpment (vegetation regeneration, weed and erosion control), Mitchell Creek low flow area, stormwater retention basins, industrial waste and runoff to local waterways, Catalina and Archer weed control and water quality/runoff testing.

Project Name: Lake Evella Project
Description: In 2006 Gapuwiyak Community Inc approached Engineers Without Borders (EWB) to provide technical assistance on the quality of the water in Lake Evella and strategies to ensure good management of the lake and its surrounds.Together SKM, EWB and the Council prepared a management plan for the Council. The two highest priority actions are: revegetation of cleared areas around the lake, in particular closest to the lake, and installation of gross pollution traps at the outlet of each of the main drains.

Description: Erect road signs marking the catchments of the Adelaide and Finnis Rivers on subsidiary creeks and catchment boundaries.This simple and achievable action will raise awareness throughout the community of the landscape as a whole and dynamic entity. This will help raise awareness of the impacts of pollution and land degradation across the landscape.

Description: This program has successfully been implemented since 2003, in partnership with the Australian Government. Looks at new ways to improve operations, reduce costs (energy efficiency), reduce materials consumption and waste while delivering economic, environmental and social benefits to business and the wider community.

Description: Wildlife Rescue Darwin and the Living Skills Unit at the Darwin Correctional Facility will build upon the existing program of caring for wildlife on site, including building rehabilitation cages and nest boxes used at the prison and for low cost cages to Wildlife Carers. Nest boxes encourage shared habitats between people and wildlife in suburban areas.

Project Name: Invasive Ant Surveys in East Arnhem Land
Description: Invasive ant surveys at various locations around Nhulunbuy. In partnership with CSIRO, Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) teams will locate nesting colonies of Yellow Crazy Ants and African big-headed Ants for eradication once the teams have departed the area. This funding will cover the costs associated with CVA sending two teams to the region for two weeks at a time.

Project Name: Eliminating feral animals and fencing of Pawpaw Springs
Description: Pawpaw Springs is a 300ha rainforest patch located on Tipperary Station near the Daly River. The site is in an unfenced area open to cattle, pigs, horses and water buffalo. We will fence off a corridor of land which would include Pawpaw Springs and two smaller springs that maintain permanent rainforest patches and eliminate feral animals.

Project Name: Teaching northern quolls to avoid toads to enhance their survival
Description: We propose to train captive reared quolls to avoid cane toads in captivity, before releasing them in the wild. There are encouraging signs of recovery of quoll populations in some parts of QLD, in areas where toads occur, suggesting that quolls can learn to avoid toads. The research builds a new collaboration between the Territory Wildlife Park and researchers from the University of Sydney.
