Australasian Plant Taxonomy
Cazaly’s Club Palmerston
24-28th September 2007

Seminar presentations will be accepted on any topic in plant taxonomy and related subjects, plant conservation and traditional uses of plants from Australia and the broader Australasian region.

The week’s activities will include two days of seminars (24th and 25th), a one-day field trip, and two concurrent workshops held over the final two days.

The field trip (26th) will explore sites of botanical significance between Darwin and Katherine. The price of $70 includes lunch.

Two two-day concurrent workshops (27th and 28th) in Botanical Latin and Bryophyte Curation will follow the conference proper.  These workshops will be hosted by ASBS and CHAH.  Places within the Workshops and field trip will be limited so please register early to secure your place.

Bryophyte Workshop: 27th – 28th September
Conducted by David Meagher
Maximum of 20 people, $135 each (cost includes lunch)
This two-day workshop introduces the smallest members of the plant kingdom: mosses, liverworts and hornworts.

Sessions will cover field equipment and collecting techniques, laboratory equipment and techniques, macroscopic and microscopic characters used to identify specimens, identification of a range of selected specimens using keys, and the curation and storage of specimens. You will need to bring your own dissection kit which should include superfine No. 4 forceps.  Slides, coverslips, razor blades, and chemicals will be supplied.

Botanical Latin Workshop: 27th -28th September
Conducted by Emma Short
Maximum of 20 people, $185 each (cost includes lunch)
This two-day workshop is an introductory course to Botanical Latin suitable for complete beginners and those with an interest in its workings. The course will cover the application and grammar of botanical Latin with plenty of theory and worked examples. On completion you will have a basic understanding of declensions and cases of nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and measurements.  You will need to bring a note pad, and three different coloured biros.  A work booklet will be supplied.

Emma has previously delivered this workshop to the staff of the Northern Territory Herbarium, and is also the Botanical Latin editor for the journal Australian Systematic Botany.
