Artists in Schools

The aim of the Artists in Schools (AiS) program is to provide students, teachers, parents and the wider community with first-hand opportunities to work with professional artists over a period of time, and experience the creative processes, skills, attitudes and disciplines the artist brings to their work. This program enriches school arts programs and encourages future artists and arts audiences in all art forms.

The Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport (NRETAS, Arts NT) and the Department of Education and Training (DET) jointly fund the AiS program through small grants to schools that enable the employment of a professional artist, or artists, to work with the school community.

NRETAS and DET are currently in negotiation with the Australia Council for the Arts regarding the recent commitment, by the Australian Government, for funding for Artists in Residence in educational institutions. The funding proposal doubles the pool of funds available for the Artists in Schools program. Application details for Artists in Schools Grants will be available after an agreement has been reached.

The partnership between the Artists in Schools Program and the Australia Council means that the grants available to schools and group schools will increase for the first time in more than ten years.
