Mei Lai Swan - Single Launch and National Tour

Alice Springs musician Mei Lai Swan launched her single 'Calling the Sky' on a tour through Australia, supported with a Presentation and Promotion project grant of $10,000.

What was your activity?

I released a new single titled 'Calling The Sky' in October 2008, and went on a 5-week national tour to launch and promote the single. We performed as a 3-piece band with cello/vocals, keys/trumpet, drums and additional special guests at key performances across Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and NSW.

The release and tour was publicised though including radio, street press, local and national newspapers and online avenues.

Did the activity meet your objectives?

The single release and tour successfully build my profile as an artist by receiving national and local radio play, holding interviews and coverage in street press, local newspaper and reviews.

The tour helped me strengthen and establish new relationships with many venues and media across Australia, and to build audiences across a number of states. I estimate that we performed to a total audience number of about 1350 people across the 18 shows. I sold CD's and merchandise, which helped to get my music out there and raise income.

What were the successes and challenges?

In particular, hiring a publicist was a big success, as it increased the publicity and secured key press and interviews. I had coverage in Melbourne's Beat Magazine, Sydney's Drum Media, Brisbane's Rave and Time Off and an interview in the Age. It greatly decreased my own workload.

Living in Alice Springs, a challenge for this tour was to find the right musicians to play with on tour and to have time to rehearse.
