What was your activity?

Arts NT funding contributed to the production of a new work, Tracy, by Business Unusual (BUU).

Tracy comprised text, puppetry, full face mask and original music and was performed at Browns Mart Theatre, Darwin for a two-week season from May 27th –June 8th 2008. This season followed a four-week tour of QLD and regional NT. Darwin Theatre Company provided financial and administrative support as co-producers.

Did the activity meet your objectives?

The show was developed from oral histories and interviews with people who had survived cyclone Tracy plus interviews with the families of Nicola and Samantha. Tracy celebrated Darwin's resilience and courage in a time of terror, horror and loss and managed to reach audiences in other parts of Australia who knew little about Darwin and its history.

BUU worked, where possible, with the creative team responsible for BUU’s 2004 work The Pearler. The production Tracy developed the collaboration by developing the company rehearsal process, working to develop and explore form and process and building on the previous work, the shared vocabulary, exploring and extending the performers complicity and discovering new artistic relationships.

What were the successes and challenges?

The project successfully created an original production of local and national significance that told an important part of Australia's history as the play explored the contrast of white and black experience and displacement.

We received very positive feedback and the overall response in the Darwin season as well as on tour, was that Tracy resonated strongly with local audiences. And Tracy was selected by Melbourne-based national production house, Blackbird Productions for future seasons around Australia.
