Program for art at the heart launched this week
Arts Minister Marion Scrymgour has launched the program for the 2008 Regional Arts Australia national conference art at the heart in Alice Springs, saying there were many highlights that would make the event one of the most important in the Territory this year. Ms Scrymgour said experiencing the culture and art of the Arrernte people of the Alice Springs region would be a highlight for what will be one of the biggest conferences ever held in Central Australia. The Northern Territory Government has provided funding of $160,000 for the event – with early estimates that the conference will inject more than $2 million into the Central Australian economy. http://newsroom.nt.gov.au

The program is now available on www.artattheheart.com.au.

The closing date to apply for travel support of up to $1,500 to attend art at the heart has been extended to Wednesday 9 July. Support notifications will be given by 9 August.

Consultant Justin Macdonnell is currently undertaking an independent review of the NT theatre and performing arts sector for Arts NT and the Australia Council for the Arts. This is a call-out to artists, writers etc in regional Australia, (meaning, outside state capitals) to design and make postcards on the loose theme of their own locality and relationship to it and mail them to deLiver HQ, Alice Springs, where they will be exhibited as part of the 'art at the heart' Regional Arts Australia nation conference and the 'Imagine Alice' arts program. The postal system is vital for regional Australia, where vast distances can be isolating. In this age of instant messages we want to pay homage to snail mail, which still connects us as art makers, zinesters, and writers. deLiver is a flow of homemade miniatures from the periphery to the centre and back again, acknowledging the postal system as the arteries and veins leading to and from the vital organs of the country.
