Careers at NRETAS

New Apprenticeships Program

The New Apprenticeships Program provides Territorians the opportunity to gain a qualification through structured employment and training with NRETAS.  The length of the program will depend on the discipline that the apprentice will undertake and can range from 12 months to 4 years.  Employment is offered as a temporary contract, which includes both "on" and "off" the job training.  Whilst there is no guarantee of ongoing employment upon successful completion, NRETAS have a succession plan in place for apprentices and where possible offer further employment or assist with transition into the private sector.

Generally, Certificate III level qualifications are offered in a wide range of disciplines such as;

  • Horticulture*;
  • Conservation and Land Management*;
  • Drilling (Water Well);
  • Tourism (Guiding)*; and
  • Captive Animals (Zoology).

Apprentices will be rotated throughout NRETAS to broaden their experience and skills within the Department whilst being supervised, supported and assisted to meet the requirements of their course competencies.  Apprentices will also be required to attend quarterly apprentice forums and participate in career expos.

The Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS) Apprenticeship Program provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the public sector.  As an NTPS apprentice you will participate in a variety of work and training opportunities.

There are two intakes of apprentices per year.  One intake occurs in February (advertising in approximately October) and another in August (advertising in approximately May).  Advertising is carried out in newspapers, the NTG Employment Opportunities website (www.nt.gov.au/jobs) and through schools.

Applicants must meet strict eligibility criteria as follows:

  • Minimum 15 years of age at date of commencement;
  • Australian citizenship / permanent residency status;
  • Must not have completed an equivalent or higher qualification in the same field in the past 7 years; and
  • Applicants must undergo aptitude testing, details of which are provided in the Application Form and Recruitment Information Handbook.

Those apprenticeships marked with an asterisk [*] are specifically for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders only.
