Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award and Exhibition – 7 – 28 October 2009
The Northern Territory Government acknowledges the significant and valuable contribution that senior Territorians make to our community with the ‘Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award’. The exhibition highlights the achievements of older Territorians and encourages excellence in artistic expression.
An Alice Springs artist has won the annual Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award.
Iain Campbell beat a field of 32 other artists and art dabblers to win the $5000 Government House Foundation Acquisition Award. Mr Campbell also won the 2002 award. This year’s winning work titled José, features José Petrick OAM, a former journalist whose feature work was published in book form. She was awarded an OAM in 2000 for service to recording the history of Alice Springs.
The Speaker Jane Aagaard is hosting the Portrait of a Senior Territorian exhibition in Parliament House. She said the calibre of this year’s entries was very high.
“Some of the artists have entered before while for others this is their first portrait. All of them produced terrific images. The judges had a very hard job picking the winner.”
Mrs Aagaard judged the entries with Dr Andrea Ash and Dr Carole Wilson from the School of Creative Arts at Charles Darwin University. The judges highly commended Gerald Grady for his work titled Her Story and featuring Margaret Luta, and Emily Rogers for her piece titled Ba Ba (Arun Mahajani), featuring Dr Arun Mahajani. Mrs Aagaard said it’s interesting to note that three of the artists who entered the awards were themselves the subject of other artists’ work – Ron Talbot painted Dr Peter Murray and is the subject of Dr Al Strangeways’ portrait; Baz Ledwidge painted Rob Davy and features in Roswyn Rennie’s work; and Iain Campbell painted Jose Petrick and is subject of Henry Smith’s portrait. “
I am delighted to once again host this increasingly popular event at Parliament House,” Mrs Aagaard said. “I really admire the artists’ ability to capture the likeness, personality and even the mood of the person “I’d like to thank the Government House Foundation for sponsoring the Acquisition Award and Dr Ash and Dr Wilson for lending their expertise to judge the entries. “I’d encourage all art lovers to come and see the exhibition and cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced on October 29.”
