Adult Education Programs
The Parliamentary Education Services currently runs the following programs specifically for adults:
KNOW YOUR PARLIAMENT
Knowing how parliament works may be important to many community organisations as a means of advocating on behalf of their clients, as a way of finding out information, or in understanding how to lobby for a particular issue.
We conduct free information sessions about parliament for community groups and organisations at a place and date to suit them.
The content of each session is negotiated with the organisation and the range of topics may include:
- Role of a local member
- How a law is made?
- What happens in parliament?
- Getting an issue raised in parliament
- How do I arrange a petition?
- Submissions to parliamentary committees
- and anything else your organisation needs to know

DEMOCRACY AT WORK
The Department of the Legislative Assembly in conjunction with the Supreme Court and Northern Territory Electoral Commission have developed Democracy at Work as an educational program that promotes an understanding of the basics about the parliamentary system, the voting system and the justice system in the Northern Territory.
It is designed to target a wide range of people including community groups, new immigrants and refugees who are unfamiliar with our systems to help them understand the democracy they live in, and are expected to participate in.
Participants are taken on a tour of Parliament House, which includes a role play in the Chamber to show how a law is made, and if available, also have a question and answer session with a current member. The Northern Territory Electoral Commission do a presentation on the levels of government, voting systems and elections and then run a mock election to show how votes are counted and how preferences are distributed. While at the Supreme Court participants do a short tour of the building, take part in a role play of a trial and have a question and answer session with a judge.
Each focus area has a 90 minute session with a half hour break in between. Parliamentary Education Services coordinate the program and approaches community organisations to offer the program when it’s available. It is also possible to run the program on request.

ADULT TOURS
Parliamentary Education Services is available to run free tours of Parliament House for any organisation within the public or private sector on request. These tours can be run during parliamentary sitting days so participants can watch parliament in action as part of the visit. Tours can be tailored in length and content to suit the needs of each group.
