Place Names

The Place Names Unit's primary role is to provide the necessary administrative research and support for the Place Names Committee, in order for the Committee to make recommendations on the naming of places to the Minister as required under the Place Names Act.

The Unit maintains the Territory's official nomenclature data base - the Place Names Register.

The Unit when requested carries out nomenclature (place names) checks of map sheets and hydrographic charts.
