Aerial Photography

Aerial photography is captured primarily for the purposes of producing topographic mapping. Photographs (prints and digital images) are available for purchase through the Land Information Centres.

The Aerial Photography Archive consists of in excess of 350,000 photographs dating back to the 1940's (pre-World War II). Approximately 35,000 photographs are available for searching. About 2,000 photographs are added to the archive each year.

In 2006 new aerial photography web site was developed and will run concurrently with the old site until a complete transfer of content is accomplished. The new site contains imagery from 1996 to present and differs from the old site in that it utilizes a modern set of search and filtering tools which make finding images easier and faster.

The old site will continue in its' present form and users requiring access to photo flight indexes, images or data about images from 1979 to 2005 can still use the site.

Typically there are two flying opportunities that have the best environmental conditions (i.e. limited cloud, smoke, haze, etc.) in the Northern Territory. These are April-June in the northern regions and later in the year September for the southern region.

The current and recent aerial photography capture programs are available for viewing.
