Weddell: Tropical, Sustainable, Liveable

BackgroundWeddell Map (Click for larger version (PDF))

The Territory Government is currently planning for Weddell, our next major urban development in the Top End. This key 2030 initiative presents a unique opportunity to plan living spaces for the future with good urban design, walkability, public transport links, environmentally sustainable homes and buildings and community spaces that work for people.

The City of Weddell - Where and Why?

The City of Weddell is to be located approximately 10 kilometres south of Palmerston in an area bounded to the north by the Elizabeth River and bounded to the east and west respectively by the Stuart Highway and the Middle Arm Peninsular.  It is a greenfield site with beauty and potential.

On 4 February 2009, the Government announced the establishment of a fourth major city to be called Weddell.  Weddell will consist of up to 20 000 dwelling allotments over four suburbs, with up to 50 000 Territorians calling it home.

2021 Greater Darwin Population Projections (Click to view larger)Broad planning for the new city will commence during 2010, with an order of cost estimate of over $700 million of trunk services (power, water and sewage) and arterial roads.  It is anticipated that new land developments will commence in approximately 2014.

The Greater Darwin region is expanding very rapidly.  By 2021:

  • Palmerston will have an expected population of 42 000 and have reached its limit to grow;

  • Litchfield could potentially have a population of 28 000;

  • There will be a major commercial centre in Palmerston and commercial activity centres in Coolalinga, Humpty Doo, Noonamah and Berry Springs; and

  • Weddell could have a population of between 3000 and 10 000 depending on the speed of growth.

By 2030 the Greater Darwin region’s projected centre of population would be located closer to Palmerston (3km) than to Darwin City (12km).

Indeed, by 2030 Weddell would be as close to the centre of population as Darwin City. These estimates do not take into account the likely effects of the proposed INPEX onshore LNG investment in Darwin Harbour.

Urban infill and densification will continue to be important in Darwin’s growth. To accommodate the region’s expanding population greenfield developments will also be needed.
