Greening our Streets
Greening our Streets is an important community initiative of the NT Government providing an exciting opportunity for the community to enhance and beautify local streets in Darwin and Palmerston.
Greening Australia will deliver the Greening our Streets project, undertaking tree planting and landscaping to streets nominated by the community.
How will Greening our Streets benefit our community?
Planting trees and enhancing the landscaping of streetscapes has many benefits to you, to your neighbours, and to the wider community. Greening our Streets will:
- enhance the visual amenity of local streets
- reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere by planting trees which absorb carbon dioxide during the day and release oxygen at night
- create habitat for wildlife, particularly birds
- help to create shady streets
How streets were chosen?
Nominated streets have been prioritised according to a number of selection criteria. The profile of the street and existing landscaping have been considered, as well as community interest and proximity to community facilities. View list of chosen streets
Will I be consulted on plant selection?
Greening Australia representatives will visit winning streets during December to discuss the program’s implementation with residents. In these face-to-face meetings, more detail will be provided about the tree species planned for each area, the schedule of community planting days and residents’ responsibilities regarding maintenance.
Can I participate in planting?
Yes anyone can be involved in the tree planting. Please follow this link to find your nearest community planting day.
