Greening our Streets

Street Selection Criteria

The following factors will be considered when selecting streets to be part of the Greening our Streets program.

  • Street is to be within Darwin or Palmerston Council area.
  • Whether the street is a major access route for community facilities (eg. Marrara Sports Precinct, hospital, Casuarina Shopping Centre).
  • Level of traffic using street (higher traffic levels will allow for greater exposure and enjoyment by a larger section of the community).
  • Proximity of street to local public facilities (e.g. shops, schools, sporting grounds).
  • Does the street have existing landscaping (priority given to streets that don't currently have amenity planting).
  • Number of streets nominated in any one suburb (need a spread across suburbs and Council areas).
  • Number of nominations for any one street.

Street Selection Process

  1. All nomination forms (hard copy and online forms) are received by the Department of Lands and Planning (DLP).
  2. Nominations sorted into relevant Council areas.
  3. DLP to do initial prioritisation for each Council area based on above selection criteria.
  4. DLP to meet with Councils (and Road Network Division if applicable) to finalise street selection.
  5. Selected streets will be sent to the Minister for Lands and Planning for approval.
  6. Selected streets advertised in Darwin and Palmerston Sun.
  7. Residents in the selected streets will receive a letter providing contact details for Greening Australia.
