Regulations & Codes
National Construction Code – Adoption of Plumbing Code of Australia
In the Northern Territory, the Building Regulations call up the relevant plumbing standards. The current standards are the National Plumbing and Drainage Code (as modified by Schedule 5 in the Regulations), and the Code of Practice for Small On-site Sewage and Sullage Treatment Systems and the Disposal or Reuse of Sewage Effluent. For both Codes, AS/NZS 3500 is the relevant technical standard.
On 1 May 2011, the National Construction Code series (NCC) that incorporates the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA), was published. The PCA was not commenced in the Northern Territory on that date, as further consultation with industry about the new plumbing code was considered necessary.
A consultation draft of changes to the Building Regulations to incorporate the PCA has been prepared. To assist practitioners and the community to understand these changes, the following three explanatory documents have been prepared and may be downloaded, in addition to a copy of the draft regulations:
- Draft regulations
- Outline of the draft regulations;
- Table - work that may be carried out by category of plumber or practitioner; and
- Notes on the consultation draft (this document explains each regulation clause by clause).
The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) publishes the National Construction Code. Copies of the complete series, or individual volumes in the series (such as the Plumbing Code of Australia), may be purchased from the ABCB. Accordingly, a link to the Code may not be provided. For more information about the Code, it is suggested that ABCB be contacted directly.
