The main responsibilities of the Building Advisory Services Branch are to:
- Develop legislation to ensure that the regulatory framework meets contemporary requirements including the development and implementation of associated regulations and policies;
- Participate with the Australian Building Codes Board regarding national building industry reform;
- Monitor, audit and enforce compliance with legislative requirements;
- Maintain a central building records system;
- Provide a technical advisory service to Industry, Government and the public to ensure consistent and competent application of standards; and
- Provide administrative and technical support to statutory bodies.
The Building Act and Building Regulations make reference to:
- Building Code of Australia;
- National Plumbing Code (AS3500); and
- Code of practice for small on-site sewage and sullage treatment systems and the disposal or reuse of sewage effluent.
The Act applies private sector building certification to building control areas of the Northern Territory and registered private building certifiers now assess building applications, issue building permits, undertake site inspections and issue permits to occupy on satisfactory completion of any building works.
