Moratorium extended to give building owners more time to comply

The Moratorium to allow the owners of building structures existing before 28 April 2009 that are unauthorised or have incomplete certification to achieve compliance has been extended to 30 June 2013.

Building Certification Compliance

The Government announced in Parliament a package of initiatives to achieve a higher level of compliance under the Building Act. The package consists of:

Moratorium

The moratorium will allow existing buildings within declared building control areas to achieve compliance by 30 June 2013.

Subsidy

A subsidy will reduce the cost for building certifiers to travel to Tier 2 Building Control Areas (excluding Brewer Estate) for inspection purposes. The subsidy is:

  • for travel in connection with both existing and new buildings;
  • based on $2 per kilometre plus accommodation;
  • valid for travel carried out from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2013.

Task Force

The Minister appointed a task force to oversee compliance of buildings owned and leased by Government. The task force delivered its first report outlining what is required to ensure all government owned and leased buildings across the Territory are certified by mid 2010.

Review of Building Regulation in the NT

The Government released a discussion paper entitled Building Regulation in the NT for comment by the building industry and the community. A building industry representative group (BIRG) was appointed to manage the consultation and to receive submissions on the issues raised in the discussion paper. The relevant documents are:
