Building Advisory Services Branch

Building Advisory Services Branch administers the Building Act and associated Building Regulations to ensure that structures within building control areas of the Northern Territory achieve minimum structural, fire, safety, health and amenity standards.

Building Advisory Services Branch also administers the regulation of plumbing. The Plumbers & Drainers Licensing Act applies to plumbing licence areas.

Registered building certifiers assess building applications, issue building permits, undertake site inspections and issue permits to occupy on satisfactory completion of any building works.

October 2009

Plumbers & Drainers Licensing Act Amended

The Plumbers & Drainers Licensing Act has been amended to place its application beyond legal doubt. The application of the Act now relates to declared plumbing licence areas. Other minor changes were also made in recognition of current practice, including private certification.

Review of Building Regulation in the NT

The Minister for Planning & Lands, the Hon Delia Lawrie, recently released a discussion paper entitled "Building Regulation in the Northern Territory" and established a Building Industry Representative Group (BIRG) to manage the community and industry consultation. Submissions were invited by 20 November 2009.

April 2008

The Northern Territory Government’s Building Act reform package established the requirement for the audit of work and/or conduct of registered building practitioners (‘building practitioners’) in accordance with the Building Act (the ‘Act’).
