Lawyers' Advertising and Costs
The Attorney-General, Hon Peter Toyne MLA, introduced into the Legislative Assembly further Bills dealing with the response of the Northern Territory Government to the national crisis concerning personal injuries and insurance. The Legal Practitioners Amendment (Costs and Advertising) Bill 2003 and the Personal Injuries (Civil Claims) Bill 2003 deal with lawyers advertising and costs and pre-litigation handling of personal injuries claims. In his second reading speeches concerning these Bills the Attorney-General also approved the release of the following report on discussion drafts of the 2 Bills.

National Competition Policy Legislation Review
The Hon Peter Toyne, MLA, Minister for Justice and Attorney-General has authorised the release of a Report dealing with provisions contained in the Legal Practitioners Act and associated legislation that may be anti-competitive in terms of the National Competition Principles Agreement.

It contains background information and recommendations for the purposes of the Northern Territory Government meeting its legislative review obligations under the Competition Principles Agreement. Comments on the recommendations in the Report can be made to the Northern Territory Department of Justice, attention Robert Bradshaw. The Report does not deal with professional indemnity insurance. Indemnity insurance will be subject to a separate report.
