Role of The Office of Crime Prevention

The Office of Crime Prevention will coordinate crime prevention action, both by Government and the community, across the Northern Territory, in strong partnership with the Northern Territory Police.

The role of the Office is to:

Develop and support effective crime prevention activities:

  • By developing, coordinating and monitoring the whole of Government crime prevention strategy
  • By providing policy advice about crime reduction initiatives to the whole of Government by facilitating crime prevention partnerships between Government, Police, and the community

Provide evidence-based advice about what works in crime prevention to government and the community:

  • By evaluating the success or failures of crime prevention programs
  • By independently collecting, analysing and publishing crime and criminal justice statistics

Support community partnerships and initiatives:

  • By providing a targeted community crime prevention grant scheme
  • By coordinating Government, Police and community crime prevention partnerships
  • By stimulating and sustaining community involvement in crime prevention
