OverviewGet to know the Office of Crime Prevention The Northern Territory Government formally launched the Office of Crime Prevention and NT Crime Prevention on 25 February 2002. NT Crime Prevention is about building partnerships against crime across the Northern Territory. Protection, punishment and prevention are the three cornerstones of NT Crime Prevention. Effective law enforcement and strong deterrence are the key to the fight against crime and the role of the Northern Territory Police is paramount in preventing crime and responding when it occurs. But to be effective crime prevention needs a broad approach. It must not only attack crime when it happens but also attack its causes. Effective crime prevention must harness all the resources of government and the community. The resources Government has committed to this important activity demonstrate Government's commitment to crime prevention. $6.7 million over four years has been allocated to resourcing NT Crime Prevention and the Office of Crime Prevention. Government has increased funding, to $400,000 each year over the next three years, to community crime prevention grants for community and regional groups. The Government's plans provide the basis for a comprehensive and coordinated attack on the causes of crime across key areas of government like police, education, health, employment, housing, justice, Indigenous affairs, family services and sport and recreation. This includes measures to:
Government and the Police cannot deal with this problem alone. No one person or organisation can prevent crime in the Territory. We need the support and involvement of the whole community. We all have to work together. The Northern Territory Government is committed to building strong partnerships
against crime with the people of the Northern Territory. The community can be
an effective force in crime prevention. Regional Crime Prevention Councils have been established across the Territory with membership drawn from all areas of Territory life. The Councils look at what crime prevention initiatives will work in their regions, and encourage community involvement. The Government listens to the community and embrace good ideas for local and regional solutions. Crime Prevention Forums bring together representatives from local and regional crime prevention groups, local government, community organisations and government agencies to consider crime prevention issues. The work of existing local crime prevention groups like the Wagaman Residents Group and the Esplanade Action Group in Darwin, the Alice Springs Town Council Peer Support Program and Tennant Creek Raiders, is sustained under NT Crime Prevention.
