There are presently twelve Magistrates appointed in the Northern Territory . The Chief Magistrate and seven Magistrates are based in Darwin, three Magistrates in Alice Springs and one in Katherine. They travel extensively to many other centres and communities to hold court sittings. Magistrates are appointed by the Attorney General from suitable candidates. To be eligible candidates must hold sufficient legal qualifications and have at least five years experience as a lawyer.

The majority of Courts are open to the public and school visits are encouraged. To organise a visit for your school contact Sharon Bowman at the Masters office (08) 89996570.

Law students can find links to legislation and court decisions. For law graduates wishing to inquire about admission please contact the Supreme Court Registry.
