Stipendiary Magistrate

Michael James Carey was appointed as a Stipendiary Magistrate of the Northern Territory in April 2005.

Mr Carey was admitted to practice in Queensland in 1977 and practised as a solicitor specialising in Criminal Law and Family Law for some fifteen years before his admission to the Queensland Bar in 1992. He joined the Alice Springs office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in June 1992 and transferred to the Darwin office in January 1994.

At the time of his appointment he was General Counsel to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The greater part of his practice was conducted in the appellate courts prior to his appointment.
