LRAS is responsible for the Northern Territory's regulatory regime for wagering, and enforces licensing standards.
Racing
The major race clubs in the Northern Territory are the Darwin Turf Club, the Alice Springs Turf Club and the Darwin Greyhound Association.
Thoroughbred Racing NT Incorporated is the Principal Club for the Northern Territory.
The Darwin Cup Carnival usually runs from July into early August each year and the Alice Springs Turf Club has its major carnival in April/May.
The Darwin Greyhound Association generally conducts meetings every Friday night at Winnellie Park in Darwin.
The Racing Commission has responsibility for the Northern Territory Racing Industry. It is a body corporate established in accordance with the Racing and Betting Act and generally meets on a monthly basis.
Sports Betting
In December 1992, the Northern Territory approved Australia’s first Sports Bookmaker, Centrebet in Alice Springs. Centrebet was Australia’s first on-line sports bookmaker, commencing Internet wagering in August 1996.
Today, the Northern Territory hosts number of other sports bookmakers in Darwin and Alice Springs.
In the Northern Territory corporate bookmakers are allowed to trade 24/7.
The Northern Territory Licensing Commission is responsible for the regulation of the Totalisator Licensing & Regulation Act and Totalisator Licensing & Regulation (Wagering) Rules that allows NTTAB to conduct totalisator betting in the Northern Territory.
