To mark Privacy Awareness Week ("PAW") 2013, members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (“APPA”) – including the NT Information Commissioner – encouraged people to remember that protecting their privacy matters in today’s digital world is important.
APPA jointly produced an infographic but APPA jurisdictions also produced their own promotional materials for PAW 2013.
For example, NSW published a video from interviews with the public in Martin Place; New Zealand held a privacy workshop with a variety of interesting speakers whose papers are published; and Canada produced a poster with ten tips for preventing identity theft. All APPA members are listed here.
APPA's Infographic, highlighting the impact of technology on personal privacy, is available in 6 different languages and can easily be shared with friends and family on social media or other networks. It is available for downloading from http://www.privacyawarenessweek.org/resources.html. In the NT, we are acknowledging the good work done by NT public officers to protect the personal information of each and every one of us. To mark the occasion, we hope that information officers will join us for a social occasion to get to know each other and exchange ideas with the Commissioner and staff of our office. We have published a poster that summarises the salient privacy principles guiding public officers in their work. The poster can be downloaded here. After a wonderful 2 day visit to the Katherine region in April, our Commissioner intends to visit Alice Springs in May, to promote privacy awareness amongst seniors and other groups. The activities and/or materials from all the other APPA jurisdictions can be found here. |

Privacy Awareness Week ("PAW") 2012
PAW 2012 was an exciting event for the Northern Territory, with a full page feature article
in the Sunday Territorian on 29 April to start the celebrations.
The daily privacy tip, starting on Monday 30 April and ending on Friday 4 May 2012, is still available for downloading here.
The major focus of PAW 2012 was on youth and on senior citizens.
The youth promotion for 2012, sponsored by the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA), is a website for young people, their parents and teachers, full of useful links and tips on topics such as sexting, social networking sites, cyber bullying and privacy online. The youth website is http://www.privacyawarenessweek.org and the promotional poster for the Territory can be downloaded here.
The product for seniors is a set of five Privacy Cards that cover a range of issues including scams, staying safe online and ways to protect personal, financial and health information. The cards are available from the Office of the Information Commissioner or they can be downloaded by seniors for free. The cards are reproduced with kind permission from the Office of the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner but are subject to the following special license agreement conditions:
