Births, Deaths and Marriages

What is the Births, Deaths and Marriages Office?

The statutory function of registering births, deaths and marriages is carried out by the Office of the Registrar-General. The Northern Territory Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is a section within the Registrar-General's Office and is responsible for recording all births, deaths, marriages and changes of names occurring in the Northern Territory.

The role of the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry

The Office:

  • maintains registers of births, deaths, marriages, adoption, changes of name and Aboriginal Population Records;
  • records Ministers of Religion authorised under the Commonwealth Marriage Act 1961;
  • conducts searches and issues certificates of information contained in the Registers in accordance with privacy guidelines and identification requirements;
  • provides statistical data for medical and Government research; and
  • conducts civil marriage ceremonies.

Office Service Standards

Registration of births, deaths & marriages

If the information given is complete and accurate from the date of receipt in the Office, staff will:

  • Register a birth within three days;
  • Register a death within three days; and
  • Register a marriage within three days.

Issue of certificates and extracts

On receipt of a correctly completed application form and payment of the required fee, staff will:

  • Produce a full certified copy or an extract within 10 minutes if the application is received at the counter and the detail is held on the computerised database; and
  • Produce a certificate within two days if the application is received by mail or the detail is not stored on computer.
  • Produce a certificate within two days, if the application is received by facsimile.

If a priority service fee is paid for a non-computerised death, marriage or change of name certificate application, staff will issue the document while an applicant waits at the counter, or on the same day if it is to be sent by mail.
