Peripherals

A peripheral is a device that attaches to a Personal Computer (PC) and transfers information into or out of the PC. Examples of peripherals are scanners, MP3 players, digital cameras and printers.
Printers
Printers are normally purchased at the same time as the computer and some are included in package deals. You will need to decide how much printing you intend to do and what you will be printing. There are two main types of printers: laser and ink jet.
Ink-jet printers are cheaper to buy and would generally suit household needs. However, you should also ask the retailer about ink cartridge costs for the printer and how much printing can be done per cartridge. This varies with printers. If you do a lot of printing you may find that cartridge replacement costs for the cheaper printers will be expensive in the long term.
A printer's resolution and colours determine the quality of its print. Print resolution is measured in dots per inch or dpi. For example, 720 by 360dpi means that the printer can produce 720 dots per inch horizontally and 360 dots per inch vertically. If you multiply the two figures you will get the number of dots printed in a one-inch square. Sometimes the dpi will be advertised as one figure such as 600dpi, which means 600 x 600 dpi or 360,000 dots per square inch. Generally, the more dots per square inch the higher the resolution and the better the print quality.
Print colours are important when you want to print in colour. To obtain at least the basic colours you should be looking at a printer with CYMK colours or cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The cheaper printers will only have three colours: cyan, magenta and yellow. (Black being produced by placing dots of each colour on top of one another).
There are different types of paper that can be used with printers. If you are printing text only then plain paper should be sufficient. However, colour printing may look blurry or run on plain paper. For better quality colour printing you may want to use glossy paper.
