Shopping around

Shop around, the market is very competitive and prices for the same systems can vary substantially. If you are comparing prices make sure that you are comparing equivalent packages. Some systems may appear cheaper, but on a closer look it's because they are using inferior parts. To compare packages at different shops you may want to ask the seller for:
- written quotes that specify the type of parts in the system, their speed, memory size and any software included;
- information about warranty;
- a delivery time;
- information on training or support provided with the deal.
Avoid the hard sell
You should avoid salespeople who try to pressure you into signing up there and then. Take the information away from the store and think about it. Remember, if you're just getting a quote, there is no need to sign anything.
Be wary of deals that include lots of extra software or Internet connection in the price. Find out how much the software and Internet service costs if bought separately. This will give you a better idea of the deal's real value. Some packages include trial or shareware that might cost you more if you want to keep using it.
The retail incentive scheme
The retail incentive scheme may operate in department and superstores. It describes situations where manufacturers reward salespeople who sell their products exclusively. You may find that a salesperson is trying to persuade you to buy a particular brand not because it meets your needs but because they will get a commission from the sale.
To reduce the risk of buying something that you don't really need, you may want to shop around. Go to different sellers and see what is recommended for your needs.
