Trade Measurement
Transition to national system of Trade Measurement
On 13 April 2007, following a review of state and territory trade measurement systems, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to the introduction of a single national system of trade measurement, administered and funded by the Commonwealth. Commonwealth administration will commence on 1 July 2010 and National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division of the Department of Industry, Innovation Science and Research, will be the responsible agency.
Commencing in September 2008, NMI released the first in a series of three consultation papers in relation to servicing licensing regulation, public weighbridge regulation and trade measurement regulation. The submissions to each of these consultation processes have been summarised and are now available from the NMI website.
On 11 September 2009 the National Trade Measurement Regulations 2009 (Cth) commenced. This is an important milestone in the transition of trade measurement responsibilities from the state and territory jurisdictions to the Commonwealth.
On 1 July 2010 the National Measurement Institute (NMI), Australia’s peak measurement body, will inherit the responsibility of trade measurement.
