Building Safer Communities
Safer Kids & Families

We don’t want our children or young people to be victims of crime and we don’t want them to commit crime.

By working together, the community and government can help set young Territorians on the path to positive participation in the social and economic life of the NT.

They are the future and integral to our efforts in Building Safer Communities.

The following websites will take you to relevant programs for the protection and nurturing of young Territorians.

Remember, you do not need to prove abuse or neglect; you need only report your concerns. The Act also makes it clear that making a report does not breach any requirements of confidentiality or professional ethics.

Department of the Chief Minister

Office of Youth Affairs

Create communities where young people can feel safe and secure

Just like other members of the community, feeling safe is important to young people. Through its Youth Policy Framework, Building a Better Future for young Territorians, the Northern Territory Government identifies the creation of communities where young people can feel safe and secure as one of its priorities.

Provide more opportunities for young people to have fun and develop new skills

Having access to a wide range of recreational and sporting activities is important for many young people. Through the Office of Youth Affairs, young Territorians have told Government that they want and expect recreation and entertainment opportunities of a high standard. They also want to be actively involved in the development of these activities to make sure that the activities are what they really want. Recreational, sporting and skill development activities and programs are an important way that the Government and the community can assist young people to reach their potential.

Mental Health

During Mental Health Week in October 2004, Ms Marion Scrymgour MLA, in her dual capacity as Minister for Family and Community Services and Minister assisting the Chief Minister on Young Territorians, launched the Mind your Mind Kit: Promoting positive mental health amongst young people.
