Systems support ‘on the ground’ work and are essential to ensure the smooth delivery of programs and services. Building a better system requires action in many areas, from prevention through to services for victims, and dealing with offenders during imprisonment and on release. Each of these areas are priorities. Better ways of working will also be our priority. Partnerships with Territorians will continue to be the way this Government approaches crime prevention. On the frontline – our Police ForceThe NT Police Force has undergone major changes in recent years. Record rates of recruitment have seen police numbers increase across the Territory. Out of date equipment has been updated or replaced. Police continue to serve and protect our community, but do so under new structures and with new ways of working. Police are at the forefront of Building Safer Communities for us all. Combining the very latest in science and technology with the tried and true methods of traditional policing, the frontline of crime prevention has never looked healthier. See the links below for further information. Partners in crime preventionCoordination of effort in crime prevention must start from the very top. That’s why the Government has set up a Ministerial Standing Committee on Crime Prevention with Ministers working together to set Government’s approach to crime prevention. As well, Chief Executives of key government agencies meet regularly to ensure coordination, and the commitment and drive across government, is happening from the highest level. But Government can’t do it alone. Our focus in crime prevention is about building partnerships against crime. This Government values the collective knowledge and experience of Territorians. Together we can Build Safer Communities. See the links below for further information on community involvement in crime prevention and how you can be a part of it. People, places and systemsBuilding a better justice system is based on the women and men working in it. All parts of the workforce have a role to play from teachers and youth workers to Police and Correctional Services officers. In building safer communities, the NT Government will continue to examine national and international best practice for the range of services across the justice system and work to implement what works best for the Northern Territory.
