The following projects are examples of crime prevention/community safety activities that are being undertaken across the Northern Territory. They may provide you with some ideas of things that you can do in your part of the Territory. Safer Kids & FamiliesDeadly Treadlies Funds were provided to extend a bike rebuilding project that has been operating out of Alice Springs Youth Accommodation and Support Services (ASYASS) since January 2003. In the process of bicycle rebuilding, Deadly Treadlies trains young people in a variety of skills: team work and planning, mechanical and retail, personal development and enterprise development. Safer Homes & BusinessesBarkly Region Safer Communities Committee: Anti-Vandalism/Anti Graffiti – Safer and More Attractive Community Project A three-phased project to address graffiti and vandalism (and associated issues) in Tennant Creek. The initial objective is to create a more attractive environment through community involvement. The overarching aim is to create a safer community facilitated by Tennant Creek residents’ involvement in this project. Works of art have been created and displayed throughout Tennant Creek, proving popular with both locals and tourists. Borella Park Local Crime Prevention Committee: Borella Park Safety Project This project aimed to implement and maintain crime prevention strategies based on the results of a safety and security audit of Borella Park, and increase park accessibility and use through environmental design. Protecting TerritoriansShop Distributive & Allied Employees Association (SDA): Territory Shop Safe SDA received funding through the NT Crime Prevention Grant Scheme to undertake a 'Shop Safe' project. The project involved the development of a Shop Safe 'kit' to assist the retail sector to create a safer work environment and in particular to learn how to respond to armed robberies and violence against retail workers. Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women's Council Aboriginal Corporation: Support of Victims of family and domestic violence Provision of support and advocacy for victims of family and domestic violence when the Magistrate’s Court sits in Mutitjulu. This is a project of the NPY Women's Council's Regional Crime Prevention Council. Two way JusticeLtyentye Apurte Aboriginal Cultural Exchange Program A Cultural Exchange Project, designed to provide young Indigenous offenders and potential offenders from Ltyentye Apurte with a range of options to divert them from the criminal justice system. In particular, it aims to encourage these young people to strive to achieve a higher level of education and to become more involved in their communities, thereby creating a safer living environment. Larrakia Nation – Larrakia Hosts Project Mobile teams of Larrakia hosts were established to encourage itinerant countrymen and women to behave in a culturally appropriate manner which respects Larrakia cultural protocols. Tackling Substance AbuseMt Liebig Youth Project The project aims to reduce petrol sniffing and encourage the establishment of an anti-sniffing peer group. The grant provides funding for the purchase of trail bikes for a diversion project targeting young petrol sniffers. Last Updated: 4/04/05 |
