Regional and Indigenous Crime Prevention Councils

Youth Justice: A Crime Prevention Forum 2005 was a meeting of Regional and Indigenous Crime Prevention Councils (R&ICPCs), local crime prevention committees, government agencies and community organisations.

It was hosted by the Office of Crime Prevention, Department of Justice, Northern Territory Police, Fire & Emergency Services and the Darwin Regional Crime Prevention Council.

The purpose of the Forum was to focus on the broad theme of Youth Justice. Workshops and presentations addressed legislative and government initiatives, community responses and relevant statistics on youth justice. Copies of the Forum papers are available on the Office of Crime Prevention website.

The Forum was officially opened by the Hon Dr Peter Toyne, Minister for Justice.

For more information, please contact the Office of Crime Prevention on email crime.prevention@nt.gov.au or telephone 8999 6275.

To find out how you can participate in crime prevention activities in your local area, you can contact a Regional Crime Prevention Council (RCPC) or Indigenous Crime Prevention Council.

RCPCs have been set up across the Northern Territory to ensure Government remains in touch with crime prevention issues at a community and regional level. The Councils stimulate and sustain community involvement in crime prevention, and provide advice to Government on what's working in crime prevention in each Territory region.

Indigenous Crime Prevention Councils have been set up across the Northern Territory in Indigenous communities. The councils work in partnership with Government agencies and are involved with community safety issues, community planning, management and improvement of services such as the Safe House program, night patrols, diversionary programs for young offenders, input to court sentencing processes, drug and substance abuse education through schools, and law and justice planning in their respective communities.

Neighbourhood Watch NT

Neighbourhood Watch NT is a very successful community based crime prevention program aimed at the protection of property and personal safety. Neighbourhood Watch NT is on the move in communities developing initiatives and educating residents on their personal safety; encouraging neighbours to get to know each other; and developing partnerships between Neighbourhood Watch and Councils as well as other organisations. The ultimate success of Neighbourhood Watch depends largely on a commitment to cooperate between residents and the police, but more importantly between the residents themselves. As a member of Neighbourhood Watch, you join with your neighbours and friends in the fight against crime.

Safety House

The Safety House Program is a community based network of safe places in your local area. A Safety House can be a house, a shop or a business. Safety Houses provide assistance to anyone in the community especially children, should they feel unsafe, threatened or unsure. The program also aims to play a preventative role in community safety, providing a safer neighbourhood for our children.

Would you like your activity/program included here? If you have an activity or program that other people can be involved in let us know (Email: crime.prevention@nt.gov.au).
