Building Safer Communities
About Building Safer Communities

Building Safer Communities (BSC) is the Northern Territory Government’s framework for crime prevention and community safety.

As such the framework sets out the Government’s vision for action across the Territory, to build safer communities in which all Territorians enjoy safety and security.

The building blocks of the framework are:

  • Children and young people;
  • Protecting your home and business – preventing property crime;
  • Preventing violence – protecting Territorians;
  • Two way justice – engaging Aboriginal culture and communities;
  • Tackling substance abuse; and
  • Targeting punishment and preventing (re)offending.

Building Safer Communities also identifies three key areas for strengthening and reforming our legal and justice system:

  • Front line responses – our Police Force;
  • Partners in crime prevention; and
  • People, places and systems.

The challenges and what has been and is currently being done is outlined under each of these areas. Importantly, future directions under each of these areas are also set out.

The future directions provide the framework for planning across government in the next five years, as well as better and new partnerships with communities and the non-government sector, local government and the Commonwealth.
