Registry Office Marriages are solemnised in the Marriage Room of the Births, Deaths and Marriages Office in Darwin or Alice Springs. The Deputy Registrar is available to solemnise marriages during office hours only, i.e. between 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
The Registry Office total fee for a marriage is $AU170.00. This is divided into (2) separate fees. The first is the lodgement fee of $AU70.00 which must be paid when lodging the completed Notice of Intended Marriage form. Please note that this lodgement fee is non-refundable. The second is $AU100.00 and is to be paid no later than one week prior to the wedding ceremony. The $AU100.00 balance may be refunded providing at least 14 days notice has been given prior to the day on which the wedding was to occur.
A Notice of Intended Marriage form or NIM must be completed by both parties and signed before an authorised witness (please refer to the back of the form for the list of witnesses). The notice must be lodged at least ONE MONTH AND ONE DAY before the proposed date of marriage, i.e. if the notice is lodged on 3 May, the earliest date of marriage is 4 June. The Notice is valid for eighteen months only from the date of lodgement.
